How qualification from groups works

This is the first 48-team, 12-group World Cup, and the qualification rules are more complex than in previous tournaments. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups advance automatically to the Round of 32 — that’s 24 teams. The remaining 8 spots go to the best eight third-placed teams across all 12 groups, ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored.

This means even a third-place finish can be enough to advance — making early goal difference, like Germany’s +6 or the USA’s +3, potentially decisive later in the group stage when third-place teams are ranked against each other.
