How qualification from groups works
This is the first 48-team, 12-group World Cup, and the qualification rules are more complex than previous tournaments. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups advance automatically to the Round of 32 — that’s 24 teams. The remaining 8 spots go to the best eight third-placed teams across all 12 groups, ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored.
This means even a third-place finish can be enough to advance — making early goal difference, like Germany’s +6 or the USA’s +3, potentially decisive later in the group stage when third-place teams are ranked against each other.
